Hitting the Mark: GRiD’s Guide to Legislation and Compliance Standards

In the world of military-grade technology, a product’s true strength is not just measured by its durability in the field. It’s also defined by its integrity long before it ever sees a mission. In this blog, we look at the significance of legislative and safety standards and how GRiD Defence Systems ensures compliance and product safety across its portfolio.

GRiD’s commitment to creating the toughest rugged laptops and tablets on the market today aligns with a true dedication to compliance and safety. This is not just about meeting regulations; it’s about guaranteeing that every component, every material, and every battery is rigorously tested and documented to meet the highest standards.

As many readers will know, the last decade has seen a transformation in regulations from a simple delivery note to what has now become a mountain of paperwork.

From navigating critical standards, like UKCA, CE, RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), to REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals), we ensure every shipment has the correct UN battery classification labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). GRiD handles the complexities of compliance, so our customers can focus on their mission.

And looking to the future, the European Commission Directive, Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation is an upcoming area which GRiD sees as growing in importance as it focusses on the sustainability of products which is a major environmental prioritisation for world governments and industry.

The Alphabet Soup of Compliance: What Marks Mean

Navigating the world of product regulations can feel like deciphering a cryptic code. At GRiD, our internal stamp of approval goes far beyond the basic requirements, ensuring every product is not just rugged, but also compliant with the highest global and military standards.

We are going to break down six key marks that GRiD focuses on daily. Our commitment to conformity, compliance, and comprehension means that when one of our products arrives at your door, it has already met all the necessary health, safety, and legal standards.

CE (European Conformity): While the CE Mark is widely recognised for ensuring products meet essential European safety, health, and environmental standards, at GRiD we see it as a baseline. In our field of expertise, the mark confirms a product’s compliance with civilian electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards, this means it will not interfere with other electronics or be susceptible to their noise. It also verifies basic physical safety, like the absence of sharp edges, akin to what is required for consumer items. For GRiD’s military-grade equipment, these civilian-level requirements are foundational. The rigorous testing we conduct for military standards goes far beyond what the CE mark mandates, ensuring our products are built to perform reliably in the most demanding environments.

RoHS: This EU-directive ensures the limitation of hazardous materials in electronic and electrical equipment to protect human safety and the environment. It mainly focusses on ten substances, that includes cadmium, lead, and mercury, ensuring their range by weight must be no greater than 0.1% and in the instance of cadmium it must be much lower at 0.01%. It is important to note that other countries outside of the EU have adopted this policy into their industrial practices. GRiD observes this directive, and this is evident through our technical documentation and conformity declarations with our products.

REACH: At GRiD we recognise our responsibility to the safety of our customers and the environment. This commitment is underpinned by our strict adherence to this regulation. REACH is the backbone of our approach to chemical management. We ensure the responsible use of chemicals throughout the entire lifecycle of our products, from the manufacturing stage to their final disposal.
Our proactive stance means we regularly re-evaluate the risks of existing and new chemicals, and prioritising the use of safer alternatives, when we can. We readily provide substance declarations for our products in line with REACH Article 33 and re-issue them whenever GRiD becomes aware of a new substance of concern.

GRiD is committed to a world where toxic POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) are used only when necessary and with complete transparency.

This dedication expands to how we handle WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment). GRiD is a registered small EEE producer and provides information of how to safely dispose of products when they come to the end of the life. GRiD is always improving product design to facilitate recycling and reuse of components and materials, where possible.

GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation) is a safety regulation for consumers which is staple to the high-quality products we deliver daily and an unwavering GRiD pledge. It’s more than words, it’s a guarantee of our accountability and traceability, including our obligation to robust risk assessments and documentation.
