From a fast jet soaring across the sky, to a submarine on surveillance or a soldier navigating a muddy treeline, the hardware facilitating the data required to operate in those varied environments must be indestructible and secure.

At GRiD Defence Systems, we build mission-critical tools designed to survive the elements. We are embedded on the UK’s frontline assets from highly covert and sensitive missions conducted by submarines to international vehicle programmes like the Brazilian Guarani. In this blog GRiD highlights the integral role its rugged laptops and tablets play in multi-domain missions.

Air domain

GRiD supports air combat operations for fighter jets, primarily by providing rugged, highly configurable laptops and systems designed for both flight-line and in-air applications.

GRiD products are integrated as Aircraft Data Terminals across a variety of platforms, from heavy military transport aircraft to high-performance trainers and fast jets.

The aerospace environment is one of the most demanding for electronic systems, and GRiD’s hardware supports the displaying of data by interacting directly with the aircraft’s nervous system.

Through the integration of unique interfaces such as MIL-STD-1553, a key data bus standard for avionics, GRiD computers can plug directly into aircraft power without external converters.

Furthermore, GRiD laptops can be used for mission planning and real-time mapping, essential for avoiding hazards like power lines during low-level helicopter operations. The need for full QWERTY keyboards and expansive data displays for complex diagnostics makes the laptop form factor the preferred tool for aircrews and technicians alike.

And on the flight line, our laptops act as the primary interface for testing, maintaining, and data-loading for the Eurofighter Typhoon advanced trainers. The core of this support revolves around avionics interfacing and providing a durable, all-in-one computing solution for harsh and complex military environments.

For example, the GRiDCASE 1595 rugged laptop can be used for Mission Planning Systems and Ground Support Equipment, respectively. This is critical for fighter jet operations on the ground as GRiD hardware can connect directly to a fighter jet’s systems via common military avionics data buses, including MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, or STANAG 3910.

Sea domain

Under the sea, reliability is paramount, this is why GRiD is a key laptop provider for the British Submarine fleet.

With a strong legacy of supporting maritime operations, GRiD is an established leader in rugged technology for submarines. The team does not just build durable systems; we have a deep understanding of the extreme challenges submarine crews face, from the limited space envelope to the complexities of a boat’s electrical systems.

Power is non-negotiable when you are hundreds of metres below the surface. Submarines use AC power and require AC to DC power adapters to convert the voltage for use with their equipment. The key to GRiD’s solution within this scenario is our ability to supply AC-powered devices for submarines and the adaptability of our devices to run on either AC or DC power.

This dual-input functionality eliminates the need for bulky, single-purpose AC-to-DC converters, which are typically required to bridge the gap between the submarine’s main power supply and its various DC-powered systems. GRiD’s products can be plugged directly into the submarine’s AC grid.

On the surface, for small craft and RIBs, GRiD provides tablets that can withstand the violent slamming of hull-to-water impacts and the constant corrosive spray of salt water.  GRiD laptops can serve as a primary mobile tool for mapping and ship-wide systems maintenance.

Land domain

For the dismounted soldier, GRiD’s handheld units, such as the GRiDCASE 1510, are designed with a focus on size, weight, and power (SWaP). These devices are small enough to fit in a standard uniform webbing pouch yet powerful enough to run ballistic calculators and FireStorm targeting systems.

The land domain is unforgiving thus hardware must operate in downpours on Salisbury Plain or within the parameters of fine dust in desert deployments. With the addition of an IP68-rated sealing, this ensures that a soldier can move readily from dry to wet terrain at ease.

Due to the long life of military programmes, GRiD products have a 15-year-plus life cycle with no planned obsolescence; this is achieved by our in-house design, ensuring our customers avoid the ‘component obsolescence’ trap common in commercial rugged gear.

In vehicle-mounted applications, there is a definitive shift towards rugged tablets. These are increasingly used for battlefield management systems, providing commanders with a high-resolution digital map of the area of operations.

Moreover, GRiD laptops continue to power communication suites and health and usage monitoring systems, ensuring the fleet stays operational.

By utilising Intel® Embedded Processors and machining our chassis from solid aluminium tool plate, GRiD ensures that our systems provide the quietest EMC profiles (meeting DEF STAN 59-411, MIL-STD-461 and TEMPEST standards) while maintaining the processing power required for the next generation of software-defined defence.
